Tourist Signing Policy

Tourism SignThis document sets out the County Council's policy towards the provision of tourist signing on the local road network within Worcestershire, trunk roads and motorways being dealt with by the Highways Agency (HA). The principles outlined in current Government guidance have been used to develop this document, which forms the first review of tourist signing policy for the County since 1996. The over-riding objective of providing tourist signing is to improve road safety by giving clear information to road users, allowing them to clearly identify the route that they need to follow to reach their preferred destination.Tourist signing should not be used purely as a marketing or advertising tool, a clear road safety and or environmental benefit will need to be demonstrated before signing requests will be approved.

Applications will be dealt with by the Traffic Management Team for a non refundable fee of £100, successful applicants will be informed of the costs of implementation, as soon as practicable. The application will remain active for two months post approval, if no confirmation is received from the applicant then the application will be terminated.

Once implemented the costs of maintaining the signs must be met by the applicant, the County Council will advise the applicant of any works required to be carried out and the costs, once agreed the work will be scheduled however if no authorisation is received then the signs for the whole route will be removed and a bill raised to recover costs from the applicant. Similarly should the Tourist Destination cease to operate, or change its name, then the County Council would remove the signage and pursue recovery of any costs from the operators of the venue. Furthermore the County Council reserves the right to remove the signs should future policy changes deem that the tourist destination is no longer eligible to be signed.
