All forms of transport accidents can be the catalysis to a major emergency event, whether that is by rail, road, water or air. Worcestershire has an extensive transport infrastructure that serves the heart of the country. It features 3 motorways that cover a total of 246 km, railways that are a key link to the country’s rail network, canals and rivers.
Man made and natural events such as terrorism and extreme weather can exacerbate the risk of travelling. An example of this was the derailment of a train just outside Inverness in November 2005. The incident occurred because of a landslip that had been caused by bad weather.
In the UK there are major pieces of legislation controlling the transport of dangerous goods.
The requirements of each set of regulations are similar and the present guidance applies, with respect to the classification, packaging and labelling requirements, to all three modes of transport. For further information click here.
Transport users can take measures to minimise their personal risk by being aware of the weather forecast and listening to travel news. During the winter months road users can be prepared by having a winter kit that contains, warm clothing, boots, food, drink, ice scraper, shovel and de-icer.
